The present work seeks mainly to study the regional contours of Indian society which have been conspicuous despite its overall fundamental unity. Containing the articles of eminent scholars such as Professors R.P. Vyas and Vinita Parihar (Jodhpur), A. Chandrasekaran, G. Venkataraman and G. J. Sudhakar (Chennai), B. L. Bhadani (Aligarh), S.K. Panda (Berhampur) and T.K.Mathur (Ajmer), it throws welcome light on the contribution of various regions of India to the formation of the pan-Indian personality of our society. The volume is dedicated to late Professor S.R. Goyal who was Professor of History and Head, Department of History, Jai Narain Vyas University, Jodhpur. It also contains an Introduction on his own contribution to the study of ancient Indian social institutions and ideas by the editor.
