India’s policy towards Central Asia has evolved significantly, recognizing the region’s strategic importance for trade, energy security, and regional stability. Central Asia, rich in natural resources and located at the crossroads of major trade routes, presents immense opportunities for India’s economic and strategic interests. Over the years, India has pursued stronger diplomatic, economic, and security ties with the five Central Asian republics—Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan—through bilateral engagements and multilateral platforms such as the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO). The “Connect Central Asia” policy, launched in 2012, emphasizes greater economic engagement, energy cooperation, connectivity projects, and people-to-people exchanges. India has invested in Chabahar Port in Iran to gain access to Central Asian markets, bypassing Pakistan. Security collaboration has also been a key focus, particularly in countering terrorism and extremism. The growing influence of China and Russia in the region has further motivated India to strengthen its presence and partnerships. As India enhances its outreach, challenges remain, including logistical hurdles and geopolitical tensions. However, with strategic investments, regional partnerships, and a proactive diplomatic approach, India aims to reinforce its role in Central Asia, ensuring stability and mutual growth in its extended neighborhood. “India’s Policy Towards Central Asia – Extended Neighbourhood” explores India’s strategic, economic, and diplomatic engagement with the Central Asian republics, highlighting key opportunities and challenges.
