Historically Vaishnavism,the worship of Vishnu began in Manipur in the later part of the 15th century during the reign of King Kyamba.King Kyamba got an image of Lord Vishnu from the neighbouring king of Pong named Chaupha Khekhomba.The worship of Vishnu made a strong appeal to the succeeding kings of Manipur. The image was handed down to his successive rulers of this kingdom as an esteemed heirloom and his example of worshipping Vishnu was followed by them. Vaishnavim spread and existed in Manipur under the patronage of kings.Great kings like Charairongba, Garibaniwaz, Jai singh, Gambheer Singh, Nara Singh, Chandrakirti were all staunch Vaishnava rulers who dedicated their lives in the propagation of Vaishnavism. Some important measures adopted in this regard included the construction of temples, installation of images, introduction of vaishnava festivals and customs, etc. Besides the royal patronage nobles and wealthy persons of the kingdom took part in popularizing Vaishnavism. Apart of the propagation of the new faith the vaishnava kings of Manipur with the exception of King Garibaniwaz had a tolerant attitude towards the ancient faith of Manipur and it helped very much in the progress of the new faith in this land..
